"Monitoring of Drug
Interactions in Geriatry, Psychiatry and Internal Medicine Wards of Teaching Hospital
Salvador Allende" Furones, JA: Head Continued medical Education
Dept., Pharmacoepidemiology Development Center, Havana, C Contact Person: J.A. Furones (cdf@infomed.sld.cu) A descriptive drug utilization study was performed, involving 230 patients hospitalized
in different wards of Salvador Allende Teaching Hospital, with the purpose of identifying
and assessing drug interactions and its clinical consequences. A reference pattern was
designed, including electronic and press information in order to assess drug interactions.
Drug interactions were classified according to the physiopathology. Nurses were trained
for this purpose. In one week 77 patients suffering 115 drug interactions were identified
(33%) and 71% with potentially undesired medical conditions. The total relation
drug/patient was 3,7, with outstanding figures in psychiatric ward (4,09) and
Internal Medicine ward (4,52). In these wards appeared the majority of drug
interactions. According to physiopathology, pharmacokinetics(62%) and
pharmacodinamics(33%) were prevalent. The use of multiple drugs increases the risk of
interactions, as shown in this study. Back to the top. | Discussion Board | Next Page | Your Poster Session | |
