Abstract

Many clinical laboratories carry out trace element determinations in clinical samples. Quality control procedures are thus widely applied to insure that trace element results, determined at ppb (ug/kg or ug/L) levels, are reliable. The accuracy control of trace element analysis, however, is difficult to perform principally because of the low concentration present and also of the risk of sample contamination. It is essential that measurements on a national an international level be harmonized. Up to now, when intercomparisons were made, the results invariably showed differences larger than the tolerances allowed by standard specifications. The use of CRMs may help to remedy this fundamental shortcoming and so to guarantee good quality in measurement of such small quantities.
