Neurotransmitter Transporters Are NOT in the Synapse?

Abstract

Electron microscopic immunhistochemistry suggests that at least some transporters are not found IN the synapse, but rather AROUND or in perisynaptic parts of the axonal and nerve terminal membrane. Other anatomical and physiologic findings support this for some transporters such as the one for dopamine. This suggests that diffusion of neurotransmitter out of the synapse prior to uptake will be more important than previously thought. This does not diminish the overall importance of transport and uptake, but would slightly alter our view ofthe synaptic process. Supported ny NIH grants RR00165 and DA10732.
