Invited Symposium: Photodynamic Therapy |
Espiritu, M (Department of Pathology, McMaster University, Canada) Rainbow, A (Department of Biology, McMaster University, Canada) Abstract Resistance to photofrin, Nile Blue A and Aluminum phthalocyanine tetrasulphonate mediated PDT was induced in human colon adenocarcinoma cells (HT29), bladder carcinoma cells (HT136) and neuroblastoma cells (SK-N-Mc). The cells were selected after 8 to 11 cycles of repeated in vitro PDT treatment at the 10% survival level. Regrowth from single surviving colonies was conducted after each cycle for the three photosensitizers and the three cell lines. The resulting nine different cell variants were examined for their sensitivity to PDT mediated by the particular photosensitizer used to induce resistance. The induced resistance was greatest for the HT29 and HT1376 cells and minimal or non-existent for the SK-N-MC cells. (supported by NIH CA43892-04 programme project 3).
