Abstract

Inadequate bronchial asthma treatment may enhance mortality rates due to this disease. In order to identify which drugs are used in Primary Care, as well as how they are used (therapeutical schedule), this study was performed in three Primary Care Health Areas. The endpoints assessed were: kind of prophilactic and symptomatic treatment, disease severity, therapeutic schedule, compliance to treatment. The sample was randomized from various Family Doctor's consultation. The total amount of drugs used as symptomatic treatment was 1248, being inhaled beta agonists the most frequently (54,7%), and used at schdule in 50,4%. For prophilactic treatment antihistamines were mostly used in 34,1 % of the patients. In the three areas pharmaceutical forms containning more than one active principle were prescribed. As conclusions we can say the prescription does not complies with guidelines established in medical literature, being the most outstanding problem the drug selection.
