Abstract

Epidemiological and experimental papers show changes of homeostasis of some essential elements in heavy metals exposures. This paper aims to establish the relationship between the intensity of lead exposure and the length of exposure on one hand, and possible changes in the concentration of some essential elements (copper and zinc) in blood. Copper and zinc were determined by spectrophotometry in atomic absorption. The concentration of these elements was monitored in white rat intoxicated with lead acetate 2% and 20% at 15 and 30 days respectively from the beginning of the experiment. The concentration of serum zinc evolved during the experiment in two different phases: 1) at 15 days was increased significantly and doses dependent. 2) It was significantly decreased after 30 days of intoxication with high dose of lead. Serum copper had an evolution similar to zinc, with significantly increases after 15 days and decreases at 30 days. Behavior of these two essential elements concentration can explain, viewing the literature data, by successive redistribution between the different target organs of the lead action.
