Abstract

The disturbance of calcium metabolism in lead, cadmium and manganese exposure is known from many years. This disturbance is well shown by modification of serum calcium concentration. Decreases of serum calcium values in lead exposure were underlined in many studies. Epidemiological and experimental papers had shown also increases over normal values of serum calcium. In the paper we present the results of a study carried out on 179 persons with occupational lead exposure in concentrations 2-15 times over admissible limits. Even if the prevalence of cases with low levels of serum calcium was high, we found also numerous cases with high levels of serum calcium. A previous experimental study of the authors using different lead concentrations and various exposure periods brings possible explanations of this phenomenon.
