Abstract An epidemiological prospective study was carried out to investigate possible methyl methacrylate (MMA) carcinogenic effects in workers producting and processing of organic polymer glass. The causes of death from 1938 to 1985 years were studied. There were 3914 person with length of service 3 and more years in this cohort. The higher relative death risk from cancer was revealed: oral cavity and pharynx (in 15 times, p < 0,05), colon (in 1,4 times), larynx (in 3 times), mammae (in 1,3 times), urogenital organs (in 2 times), haemoblastosis ( in 2 times), although total risk of all cancer deaths was less than expected risk. By analysis of dependence between expression of cancerogenic risk and MMA exposure duration we determined positive correlation in women for reproductive system cancer (r = 0,961, p < 0,05), in men for lung cancer (r = 0,963, p < 0,05). It is not proved carcinogenity of MMA in experiments, but in some tests they found that MMA had mutagenic, embryotoxic and teratogenic properties. The genotoxic properties of MMA were investigated by epidemiological studies. The considerable increase of spontaneous miscarriage risk in women exposed to MMA and inborn defects in their children was revealed. All this is an index of adverse mutation processes. Basing on the results of our investigations, it is necessary to take measures to create safe working conditions, as well as further detailed studies of remote effects on workers' health due to MMA exposure.
