Abstract
The constructs of shyness, social anxiety, social phobia, and behavioural inhibition share considerable conceptual ground. In this symposium, experts in these areas have been invited to share their thoughts and recent research regarding the development of social phobia. Collectively the work of these researchers covers the range of human development from infancy through adulthood. This paper serves as preface to the set of papers in the symposium. We will open a discussion by reviewing the common conceptual ground that links these papers, with a focus on the points of contact and overlap among them. Given such a multi-disciplinary collection of experts, this symposium holds much promise for furthering our understanding of social phobia.
