A Rhodes Scholar, James Taylor, known as Si, grew up in Hamilton’s west end and was very actively involved at McMaster in dramatics, intramural sports, student politics and the Silhouette.
Dr. Taylor joined the Canadian Department of External Affairs in 1953 and rendered outstanding leadership during a 40–year career as a Canadian diplomat. His service on behalf of Canada included postings in Vietnam, India, France, the U.S.S.R., and Belgium; Ambassador to NATO; Director–General of European Affairs; Undersecretary of State for External Affairs; and a career capping four years as Canada’s Ambassador to Japan. Dr. Taylor received the Peacekeeping Medal for his service in Vietnam, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal and was granted the Order of Canada in 1997.
