Dr. Bartha Maria Knoppers has earned an international reputation for her work and expertise in the field of ethical, legal and policy issues arising from research in human genetics, reproduction and biotechnology. In 2001, she received a Doctorate honoris causa in Law from University of Waterloo, and in December 2002 she will receive a Doctorat honoris causa en médicine from the Université de Paris V (René Descartes), France.
Bartha Maria is a full professor at the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal and Senior Researcher and Counsel to the firm of Borden, Ladner, Gervais. She is a graduate of the McGill University Law School, has an M.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta, a diploma in legal studies from Cambridge University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Paris (Sorbonne). She has been a visiting professor at universities in Canada, the United States, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
