From 1958–69, Russ was a football player with the Ottawa Rough Riders. During this period he won the Schenley Award for Most Outstanding Player three times. On two occasions he won the Jeff Russell Trophy; he was named Ontario’s Outstanding Athlete twice and Canada’s Outstanding Athlete twice. From 1975–77, he was made head coach of the Toronto Argonauts. Russ was also a mathematics teacher (1959–61) and head of the department of math at Rideau High School in Ottawa (1961–66). He later became a vice–principal and principal at secondary schools in Ottawa and Mississauga.
Russ is a member of the Order of Canada and was awarded an honorary doctor degree in law by McMaster in 1989.
