Russell Donnelly attended graduate school in physics at Yale University, receiving an M.S. in 1953 and a Ph. D. in 1956. He joined the faculty of the University of Chicago, and progressed from instructor to full professor in 1965. In 1966, he moved to the University of Oregon as Chairman of the Department of Physics Professor Donnelly has served as consultant to General motors and Dupont, to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences. He is the author of over 200 research articles and six books.
