Tony Dean Tony began his working life as a millwright in the Dunlop Tire Company in Birmingham, UK but made his mark as a senior public servant in Ontario.
Tony has a B.A. in Sociology and Social Anthropology from the University of Hull, U.K., and an M.A. in Sociology from McMaster in 1980. He worked for ten years in the public service collective bargaining before joining the Ontario public service in 1989.
Between 1989 and 1999, Dean advanced through the ranks of the Ministry of Labour, where his work on labour policy, collective bargaining services and communications led to his appointment as Deputy Minister in 1998.
In 1999, Mr. Dean was appointed the Deputy Minister and Associate Secretary of Cabinet for the province of Ontario. He assumed a senior leadership role with the many of the government’s main agencies. From 2002 to 2008, Tony was Secretary of the Cabinet and Head of the Public Service. Dean’s many accomplishments as head of the Public Service included accelerating modernization of public services through Service Ontario; promoting better collaboration within and between governments in delivering services to Ontarians; and working well with this political administration to get new policies off the page and effectively implemented in order to deliver better results for Ontarians.
