In 1948 Barbara graduated from McMaster University with a degree in chemistry, physics and mathematics. In 1954 she graduated from the University of Toronto with a master's degree in virology and achieved several credits toward a PhD in statistics methods, but she was soon swept into a career that took her around the world. In 1979, she served as the head of the Virology Section, of the National Research Laboratory with the Canadian Red Cross. She was instrumental in the establishment of test procedures for the screening of donor blood for such viruses as Hepatitis C., AIDS, and HTLB-1.
