David Braley was born in Montreal in 1941 and moved to Hamilton in 1943. He attended Westdale High and then one year at McMaster University in the Faculty of Science before beginning his career in business, initially at the General Motors Acceptance Corp in Hamilton, then on to London Life Insurance. In 1969, he acquired William Orlick Limited, which subsequently became Orlick Industries Limited, a leading auto parts manufacturer.
Mr. Braley’s involvement in sport and his community is extensive. He was the Director of the 2015 Pan–American Games and was the Director of the successful 2015 Pan–American Games Bid Corporation. He has also served as Chairman of the 2003 World Cycling Championships in Hamilton. He has owned the Hamilton Tiger Cats, acted in the capacity of Interim Commissioner of the CFL and is current owner of 25% of the CFL with his ownership of the BC Lions and the Toronto Argonauts.
He has been a generous supporter of McMaster Athletics program having donated $6 million dollars to Athletics and Recreation’s new facilities. In addition, he founded the “M Club,” a group of primarily local people or businesses who support the department of Athletics and Recreation through sponsorship and straight donations. His historical donation of $50 million to the Faculty of Health Science created the first stem cell library in Canada.
On May 20, 2010, Mr. Braley was appointed to the Canadian Senate.
