The world’s first neurologist in space, Dr. Bondar has received 24 honorary doctorates from Canadian and American universities, and in 2003, TIME magazine named her among North America’s best explorers.
In 1981, Roberta was admitted as Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in neurology and in 1982, became assistant professor of medicine (neurology) at McMaster University. She is a member of numerous medical associations, as well as many flying and aviation associations. She is a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner conducting experiments on blood flow to the brain.
In 1984, Roberta was selected as one of Canada’s six original astronauts and was later named chairperson of the Canadian Life Sciences Subcommittee for Space Station. In 1990, she was designated a prime Payload Specialist for the First International Microgravity Laboratory Mission. From January 22–30, 1992, she flew on Discovery where she performed experiments in the spaceship and on the middeck.
