Memorandum
of Agreement
regarding
the Teaching of Day Classes and Teaching in the Twilight (5:30-6:20) Hour
The Joint Committee agrees that over the period of budgetary adjustment required by the massive cut in government funding (May 1, 1996-April 30, 1999), guidelines on teaching during the day, and in the twilight hour (5:30-6:20) are desirable. The utility of the guidelines will be examined in the third year, and the guidelines will be amended or continued after April 30, 1999 by agreement in the Joint Committee.
- Currently the teaching day extends over a span of 9 hours Monday to Friday. The sequence of day classes begins at 8:30 am and ends at 5:20 pm. If adjustment of the timetable is required to facilitate reciprocal teaching arrangements with any other university during the period May 1, 1996-April 30, 1999,
- classes may not begin earlier than 8 am, and
- the twilight hour will begin 9 hours later than the first class of the day;
- Evening teaching and summer teaching are regulated by existing agreement;
- Only large multi-sectioned classes will be scheduled by the Registrar's Office in the twilight hour. There will be no change in how departments schedule classes and seminars in this period;
- Departmental Chairs shall make every effort to accommodate faculty whose personal circumstances mitigate against teaching during the twilight hour. In this regard the rights and responsibilities of the departmental Chair and the member of faculty are defined by existing agreement;
- No member of faculty shall be required to undertake teaching in the twilight hour to an extent greater than one full course in the given three year period;
- Members of faculty who teach in the twilight hour may keep the first two teaching hours of that day free from teaching duties;
- Members of faculty who teach in the twilight hour as part of their normal course load will be deemed to have satisfied any requirement to teach in the evenings or summer as defined in the Load Teaching document;
- The current arrangements which allow faculty to select an eight hour span during the 9 hour period in which classes are normally scheduled shall remain unaffected by this memorandum and shall be adjusted should we move to an 8:00 am starting time for lectures.
