We have shown that immature oligodendroglia in cultures have high iron content (Thorburne and Juurlink. 1996. J. Neurochem. 67:1014) and immature oligodendroglia can express HO1 following an hypoxic-ischemic insult (Brain Research Interactive, 1998). Connor and colleagues have demononstrated that oligodendroglia in the CNS have high iron contents (e.g., J. Comp. Neurol. (1993) 338: 97 & Develop. Neurosci. (1994) 16:233)
