Heme oxygenase (HO) has been regarded as the indirect antioxidant in the literature for the effects of its products - billiverdin and billirubin. However, heme metabolism also generates irons. The latter are strong oxidant. May the cellular damage induced iron-mediated free radical generation overcome the antioxidant protection offered by billiverdin?
